What Is a Pomodoro Timer?

A Pomodoro Timer is a simple productivity tool based on the Pomodoro Technique, a time management method created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. The idea is to split your work into short, focused intervals, traditionally 25 minutes long and called pomodoros, separated by brief breaks. After four focus sessions you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes.

The structure works because it makes starting easier and protects your attention. Committing to just one 25-minute sprint feels manageable, the ticking clock creates gentle urgency, and the scheduled breaks help you rest before mental fatigue sets in. Many students, programmers, writers and remote workers use a Pomodoro Timer to stay on task and to see how much real work they complete in a day.

This online Pomodoro Timer lets you change the length of focus time, short breaks and long breaks, counts your completed sessions, shows the remaining time in the browser tab title and plays a soft sound when a period ends. A separate stopwatch with lap times is included for tasks where you want to measure time instead of counting down.

How to Use the Pomodoro Timer

  1. Decide on one task you want to work on and close anything that might distract you.
  2. Open the Pomodoro tab, make sure Focus is selected and press Start. The default focus length is 25 minutes.
  3. Work on your task until the timer rings. If you need to pause, press Pause, and press Resume to continue.
  4. When the sound plays, take a short break. The timer switches to a short break automatically, and you press Start when you are ready.
  5. After every fourth focus session the Pomodoro Timer suggests a long break. You can change this number in the settings.
  6. Adjust the minutes for focus, short break and long break in Settings. Your choices are saved in your browser for next time.
  7. Switch to the Stopwatch tab when you want to time an activity, record laps and see split times.

Benefits of Using an Online Pomodoro Timer

Timed sprints reduce procrastination and make large projects feel less intimidating. Instead of facing a whole day of work, you only commit to the next 25 minutes, which is often enough to build momentum.

Regular breaks protect your focus and your eyes, and the session counter gives you a clear, honest picture of how much focused work you actually did. Over time you can estimate tasks more realistically by counting them in pomodoros.

Because this Pomodoro Timer runs in your browser, there is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for. Open the page, press Start and get to work.

Your privacy comes first. The Pomodoro Timer runs entirely in your web browser. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers, which keeps your data private and makes results appear instantly. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Tips for Getting the Best Results

  • Pick one clear task per pomodoro and write it down before you press Start.
  • Silence notifications and keep your phone out of reach during focus time.
  • Use breaks to stand, stretch, drink water or look away from the screen rather than checking social media.
  • If you finish early, use the remaining time to review or plan the next step instead of stopping.
  • Try 50 minutes of focus with a 10 minute break if 25 minutes feels too short for deep work.
  • When an interruption cannot be ignored, jot it down and return to it during your break.

Pomodoro Timer FAQ

How long is a standard Pomodoro?

The classic Pomodoro lasts 25 minutes, followed by a 5 minute short break. After four pomodoros you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. This Pomodoro Timer uses 25, 5 and 15 minutes by default and lets you change them.

Will the timer keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. The timer calculates the remaining time from the clock rather than counting ticks, so it stays accurate even when your browser slows down background tabs. Keep the page open until the sound plays.

Why is there no sound?

Browsers allow audio only after you interact with the page, so press Start at least once. Also check that your device volume is on and that the tab is not muted.

Are my settings saved?

Your custom durations are stored in your browser's local storage, so they are still there the next time you visit. If you use private browsing or block storage, they reset when you close the page.

Does the Pomodoro Timer start the next session by itself?

No. When a period ends, the timer switches to the next mode and waits for you to press Start, so you decide when you are truly ready to continue.

What is the stopwatch for?

The stopwatch counts up instead of down. It is useful for timing tasks, workouts or speeches, and the Lap button records split times and total time for each lap.
